Iolani: Hawaii's Royal Palace

A short walk from the State Capitol in downtown Honolulu is the seat of Hawaii's former government. Built in 1882 for King Kalakaua, Iolani Palace is the only restored royal palace in the United States. Until 1893 when the United States government overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy, this Renaissance-style building was the official residence of King Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawaii's last two monarchs.

Following the overthrow, the palace was stripped of its furnishings and used by territorial and state governments as an executive building. In 1969 when the State Capitol was completed, the Palace was vacated and Friends of 'Iolani Palace began a $7.5 million restoration of the building. During the 76 years the palace was used as a government building, more than 10,000 artifacts were sold at auction. About 4,000 of them have been recovered.

Visitors learn quickly that they are expected to enter the palace with proper respect for both its past and present. No water, no candy, no gum. No ball point pens, no photos. Beepers and cell phones off. Keep your booties on at all times.

The tour begins in the Visitor Center located in Iolani Barracks where a short video of the palace history is shown. Once inside the palace, the tour moves up a magnificent curved staircase made of hand-carved Hawaiian woods and leading to the second floor living quarters of the royal family. Built at a cost to the Kingdom of Hawaii of $360,000, the palace features 7,000 feet of koa wood. The first floor contains the state dining room, the throne room and the blue room.

Guided tours of the palace are available Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Tours are 90 minutes long. (There is a wheelchair ramp leading to the palace and an elevator inside the building.) There is an admission fee and reservations are recommended. Call 522-0822 for more information.
In addition to the palace tour, a self-guided tour through galleries installed in the basement of the mansion is available. The galleries, which are wheelchair-accessible, showcase the crown jewels of Hawaiian royalty and a collection of ancient regalia. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Please note that children under 5 are not allowed inside the main Palace.

Tropical Trips Without a Passport

No passport? No problem!  Great tropical vacations are abundant in the United States, and none of them require a passport.  Hawaii and the Florida Keys are both islands that offer outstanding tropical weather and world class beaches and neither require passports since they are part of the United States. The U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are both U.S. commonwealths. While they are not states, they are a still a part of the  U.S. and citizens do not need passports to visit by land or by sea.

1. U.S. Virgin Islands

   • The U.S. Virgin Islands of St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix are located in the Caribbean, a few hours south of Florida and do not require a passport for U.S. citizens to enter the country. Each island has accommodations that range from inexpensive motels to luxury resorts. English is spoken on all three islands and your currency is usable without having to convert it Every island is situated on amazing white sand beaches with the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The weather is tropical year round.

    Hawaiian Islands

   • The Hawaiian Islands offer a tropical vacation destination most people dream of visiting. No Passport? No Problem !

3 Ways to Visit the Caribbean Without a Passport

Yes It is still possible to have a fabulous Caribbean vacation even if you don't  have a valid U.S. passport. Here are 3 ways that you can enjoy The Caribbean with just a birth certificate and driver's license or other form of identification.

#1 Take a cruise

 If you're on a so-called "closed loop" cruise that departs and returns to a U.S. port like Miami, Tampa, Galveston, Ft. Lauderdale, San Juan, or New Orleans, you only need a birth certificate and a primary ID to travel.

#2 Visit Puerto Rico 

Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States, making travel here just like crossing a state border: no passport is required for U.S. citizens. Plus, you don't have to clear Customs, either Puerto Rico has the best air service in the Caribbean. The island provides a wide range of activities ranging from from the urban sophistication and history of San Juan to the wilds of the El Yunque rainforest.


 #3 U.S. Virgin Island

The USVI are another U.S. Commonwealth that is passport and Customs-free for U.S. citizens.
The U.S. Virgin Islands is a paradise with so much more to offer than the traditional beach vacation.
